Vodafone leverages IoT technology to prevent forest fires

Vodafone uses IoT technology against forest fires

This year Vodafone presented at its stand at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Spain, a way to take advantage of IoT technology to detect fires, thinking about the impact of climate change and how to monitor it to prevent it from producing large-scale problems.

In this European country there have been fires that have caused damage of up to 310,000 hectares in the last year, according to data from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS).

The solution proposed with this tool is to keep IoT devices monitoring from Securitas Operation Center (SOC), a company that will also be in charge of the installation.

In this way, it is expected to send alarms to fire departments or emergency centers of public administrations as soon as a fire starts, in order to reduce their impact.

Considering that in recent years, in Latin America a part of the Amazon was affected by forest fires, this is a great help that comes with the technology to preserve nature.

For its part, the German company Dyrad is in charge of developing the wireless network of environmental sensors so that these tools have a long-range radio that can be deployed in these areas that normally do not have a network.

It works by means of machine learning, using gas sensors driven by solar panels installed on trees, walkways or meshes to provide coverage for these sensors and monitoring and connectivity systems.
